Why This Low Quality
Video Worked

1. Overview

  • My role: Video Editor

  • Company: I posted this video on my spam account that I use to test new ideas.

2. Goal

  • Try out a new video format and post a funny video about Ghost Adventures.

3. Strategy

  • While watching an episode of Ghost Adventures, I saw this funny moment.

  • Instead of clipping the moment, I wanted to test out filming the moment from my phone.

Why it Worked

1. Low-Quality

  • The video feels in the moment and spontaneous as if a is friend sending you a funny moment from their day.

2. Funny Moment

  • The worker is very blunt, which causes Zak to be surprised. The camera also stays on Zak to get his full reaction.

3. High Retention Rate

  • This video tells the viewer to wait until the end for a funny moment. This increases retention rate, which tells TikTok to push out the video.

4. Encourages Comments

  • Most of the comments were pictures either memeing Zak’s reaction or sharing their own reaction.

5. Trending Show

  • Ghost Adventures is a very popular ghost hunting show.

6. Short and to the Point

  • The video is only 10 seconds long, so viewers don’t have to wait long for a payoff.

4. Execution

  • I created a TikTok video showing a funny moment from Ghost Adventures.

5. Results

  • This video achieved
    • 633,100+views
    • 113,300+ likes
    • 530+ comments
    • 9,480+ saves

6. Learnings

  • Videos that are a bit more authentic connect better with audiences over videos that are overproduced.
